Gravitar Image Example

Comments are an important part of blogging, and after recently improving spam controls and filtering, we've got something for the human posters this time — support for Gravitar Icons!

What is a Gravitar?

Gravitar is a free service that folks can use to keep the same profile image across multiple sites. The idea is you create your Gravitar by uploading your profile image, then it becomes available to any website that users the Gravitar service. If you want to change it later, no problem! Gravitar makes the change and the new image is available on all the services that use it. Since websites get your Gravitar image through a web service, previous instances of your Gravitar are also updated. For example, if you made a post on Monday, and changed your Gravitar on Tuesday, your post on Monday would automatically display the new image. Pretty cool, right? If you don't already have one, you really should think about getting your profile image set up.

Some places that use Gravitar:

  • Wordpress
  • Drupal
  • Stack Overflow
  • Smashing Magazine
  • Github
  • JIRA
  • Munzee

Homebräu Support

When enabled, Homebräu will check to see if someone posting a comment has a Gravitar image. If they do, it'll be displayed by their post! If no image is available, that's okay too, and the users name will show just like it normally would.

So there you have it, let me know what you think, post a comment and show off your Gravitar!
