Rules to Live By

posted Wednesday, August 6th 2014 at 7:26 PM by

I'm not much for deep questions, meaning of life type stuff, or wondering why is there air (I save the last one for Bill Cosby).

I'm a pretty simple guy.

I try and conduct myself in the best way I know how, using these two rules:

Sorry, We're Open

Adam Konieska.com

Welcome to the grand re-re-re-opening of Adam Konieska.com!

Originally, this site started out on an ASP server that sat in my closet during my junior year of high school. That was back in 2003, and things were great. The server ran awesomely, the code was stable, and my mom even had it book marked on her bookmarks toolbar.

Those were the days.

Then came the great server crash of 2010....

Abominable Fish Monster

Ice Fishing

So there we were, separated from civilization by miles of snow and ice, struggling to survive. Low on snacks and beer, there were only two things to do, catch fish and chew bubble gum. And we still had plenty of bubble gum...

Compatible on Mobile: Screen Resolution, Not Device Type

posted Sunday, January 20th 2013 at 10:16 AM by

Development for a website used to mean thinking about compatibility for specific devices. Developing for the desktop experience is still pretty straight forward, since there are only a handful of desktop browsers that cover 98% of the market share. Mobile, however, is an entirely different scenario...

jQuery Hover Box

posted Thursday, January 10th 2013 at 8:21 AM by

Recently I needed to use a tool tip style hovering box that would display a lot of information. I found some great libraries online that would display a div tag when the user hovered over a specific element. That was pretty awesome, I thought. Until I tried it out and realized that if the element the user was hovering over was close to the edge of the screen, the hover box would either be cut off or not displayed at all! The user deserves better...

Outlook Webmail

posted Friday, August 3rd 2012 at 3:31 PM by

Microsoft recently announced their new Outlook.com service, a successor to Hotmail.  Most likely however, its too little too late.  Hotmail was wildly popular in the late 90’s and still has around 370 million users worldwide.  But some missteps in usability and some major security flaws, coupled with the debut of Google’s Gmail in 2007 has put Hotmail in a tailspin ever since. Is this finally Hotmail’s chance for a recovery?

QR codes are used to quickly direct users to mobile content. Generally, this occurs in print and other physical types of advertising. But what about using them online, in websites and email?

Responsive is Neat, but Where is the Full Version?

posted Tuesday, June 26th 2012 at 10:12 AM by

Responsive web design is a really exciting solution to display issues across multiple screen sizes. Which is great! It provides a framework to easily maintain content and layouts between both mobile and desktop versions of a website. But a responsive design is not without a few concerns when some users want to see the full site rather than be forced to use a mobile version.
